Why is the millilitre sexier than the microlitre or nanolitre?

An excellent question! The millilitre is, quite simply, much, much larger than either of the units you propose. Micro- and nano- litres cannot be appreciated with the unaided eye, and, therefore, cannot appeal on a visceral level.
